Young Playwrights Program

WHAT’s Young Playwrights Program seeks to amplify the voices of high school aged playwrights through the development and workshopping of short plays.  Starting this March, up to 5 young writers aged 13-18 will work closely with a playwright mentor to develop an original play on a subject of their choosing.  During this developmental process, plays will be read and critiqued by workshop participants and other theater professionals.  In addition to the playwright mentors, young playwrights will have access to a dramaturg, directors, and designers to assist in refining their work.  At the conclusion of the workshop a public reading, performed by professional actors will be held.

Workshop participants will commit to periodic workshops (held on Saturday afternoons starting March 18) and sharing sessions held at WHAT, along with periodic reviews and check-ins with their playwright mentors.  Participants will play an active role in the casting and rehearsal process.  Following the public readings this spring, a feedback session will be held for all participants to share feedback from audience members and guest theater professionals.  There is no cost to participate in this program.

Interested young playwrights should submit a portfolio of creative writing samples (these needn’t be plays) along with a cover letter expressing their interest in this program to whatshappening@what.org by February 24, 2023.

WHAT’s Young Playwrights Program is generously funded by the Horizon Foundation and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
