Stephen Russell has been the Impresario of WHAT for Kids! since the program began in 2002, but his association with this company began in the third season (1987) with his debut on the Harbor Stage in Greater Tuna. He has appeared in more than twenty-five WHAT productions, most notably with Julie Harris in The Beauty Queen of Leenane (2000) and in the first production in the new building, The Clean House (2007). He is the author of numerous plays for young audiences, including this year’s WHAT for Kids production, The Surfside Snoops and the Ghost of Great Island. In 2015, Swarthmore College will produce an opera for young audiences, The Tree at the End of the World, adapted from an original scenario Swarthmore commissioned from Stephen, with music by Thomas Irving Whitman and lyrics by Nathalie Anderson. Stephen is well known in the gaming community for his voice acting in, among other titles, Thief 1, 2 and 3, System Shock 2, Freedom Force 1 & 2, Fallout 3 and Skyrim. With his colleague, Colin Hamell, he writes trade shows for the Irish government through their North American tourism board, Tourism Ireland, and travels with the company presenting these shows throughout the US and Canada. Locally, he is the Book Buyer for the Wellfleet Marketplace, where you can find the best of new hardcover and paperback releases all year ‘round. He is married to Wellfleet Librarian Elaine McIlroy and the proud father of Robin and Peter Russell, two fine actors who both also have long associations with this company.
