Cape Cod Chronicle: WHAT Makes Classic 'Born Yesterday' Fresh And Funny by Ellen Petry Whalen
WHAT's production of the idealistic comedy "Born Yesterday" is a stunning success. Director and WHAT Dramaturg Dan Lombardo has captured the feel and essence of the classic-play-turned-movie, while making it feel fresh and updated. It has everything one would expect from a big Broadway revival: the drama, the glitz and the superb acting. All it lacks is the high ticket price and the drive to NYC. (full review)
Cape Cod Times: 'Born Yesterday' still relevant today by Debbie Forman
Not much has changed in Washington politics in the 60 years since Garson Kanin's "Born Yesterday" was first produced on Broadway. The people today trying to buy legislation or limit it are probably slicker and smoother than Harry Brock, the shady, crude, tough guy wheeler-dealer in the play; these21st-century players might have Ivy League MBAs and powerful corporations behind them, but the result is the same. Actually, probably worse.
This 1946 play is as relevant today as it ever was. And the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater production, under the direction of Dan Lombardo, is crisp and dynamic, an apt reminder of what we face...
"'Born Yesterday' made Judy Holliday a star...But as Billie in WHAT's production, Winslow Corbett doesn't let Holliday stand in her way. She takes up the role with conviction, an amusing naivete, a saucy style and comical seductiveness... Tom Kee [as Brock] swaggers and yells, cajoles and threatens. He vigorously drives the play, commanding the stage with a compelling performance." Cape Cod Times (full review)
